CHARITIES

Meet Mark Solan

Mark Solan has turned his own tragic experience of cancer into helping others. Creating a trust that helps hundreds of families across the region who are suffering because of the disease, Mark is on a mission to ensure others make the most of life. Roughly 12 months ago, Mark set up the Solan Connor Fawcett Cancer Family Trust with one simple aim: ‘Let’s KO cancer’. The charity champion, from Spennymoor, County Durham, is now hoping that he’ll be shortlisted for the 2016 Pride of Britain Awards North East final four for a second consecutive year. But rather than wanting the accolade, Mark’s hope is simply that it leads to exposure for his trust.

Mark’s support for families ranges. He’s arranged weddings, helped plan funerals and even wills – but there’s also been lighter stuff too. Just recently he helped a mam’s dream of taking her daughters horse riding become a reality, while he bought one gentleman a bike because that was all he wanted after his diagnosis.

That’s expanded too since he first started. His trust now supports people battling other life-threatening illnesses rather than just cancer.

The next step for Mark is to make his trust a fully-licenced charity – something he is in the process of applying for now.
